Ven Pongal is also known as Khara Pongal is a very easy and comfort south indian breakfast recipe made with rice, moong dal along with few indian spices in the instant pot or stove top pressure cooker.
This pongal is the mild spicy version and good choice for lunch box, breakfast or even dinner.
Today i am sharing one pot Ven Pongal recipe which i prepared in Instant Pot. Traditionally rice and dal are first pressure cooked and then ghee tempering is poured over cooked rice dal mixture.

What is Pongal?
Ven Pongal recipe is a spicy and a savory dish where rice and roasted moong dal cooked together in the pressure cooker and tempered with ghee, cumin, whole black pepper, cashew nuts, ginger. Ven Pongal tastes good when served pipping hot.
There is also sweet version of the pongal called as Sakkarai Pongal and offered to the gods when festive times.
How to Make Ven Pongal in Instant pot
1. Start the instant pot in SAUTE mode and heat ghee in it.
2.Add tempering ingredients which are Jeera, black pepper, green chilli slits, chopped ginger, cashew nuts, curry leaves and hing(Asafoetida).
3) Saute for 1 min until all ingredients roasted well and remove tempering to a separate bowl.
4) Add washed moong dal and fry for 2 mins or moong dal become light golden brown.
5) Add washed rice and mix well.
6) Add water and salt to taste.
7) Close the lid on the pot, and turn pressure valve to SEALING position.
8) Set the pot to MANUAL/PRESSURE COOK (High Pressure) and set timer to 8 minutes.
9. Once the pot beeps, wait till the pressure releases naturally. Then, open the lid, add tempering and mix everything well.
10. Turn on saute mode and add 1 cup of water and cook for 2 minutes or till mixture boils.
11. Instant Pot Ven Pongal or Khara Pongal recipe is ready, serve hot with chutney or sambar.
Notes:
- Ven Pongal tastes good when made fresh and eat pipping hot.
- Pongal becomes little thick when cooling.
- Use the same recipe to make healthy pongal recipe with millets ,quinoa ,rava ,oats.

- 1 cup Rice (short grain rice preferable)
- ¾ cup Split moong dal
- 4 cups Water + 1 cup extra to adjust consistency
- 2 tsp Salt adjust to taste
